A guide to using APA style in writing research papers

Citing books in APA style

On your References page, list all your sources alphabetically by author name, according to the pattern shown here.  Use a hanging indent!

Format: Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Location: Publisher.

  • For the location, use the city and postal abbreviation of state: Cincinnati, OH (without a period).

Book with one author:

Gaunt, K. D. (2006). The games black girls play: Learning the ropes from Double-dutch to Hip-hop. New York, NY: New York University Press.

Cahill, T. (2006). Mysteries of the Middle Ages: The rise of feminism, science, and art from the cults of Catholic Europe. New York, NY: N.A. Talese.

Book with two or more authors:

Abrams, J. J., & Dorst, D. (2013). Ship of Theseus. Edinburgh, Scotland: Canongate.

Aldama, F. L., Jennings, J., & Hernandez, J. (2017). Latinx superheroes in mainstream comics.  Tucson, AZ: University of Arizona.

  • List up to and including 20 authors.

Ebook from a database:

Bouson, J. B. (2000). Quiet as it’s kept : shame, trauma, and race in the novels of Toni Morrison. Albany, N.Y.: State University of New York Press. Retrieved from https://butte.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=44170&site=ehost-live&scope=site

Ebook from a Kindle or other device:

  • You must either provide a DOI (digital object identifier) number, or the place where you downloaded the book, in place of publisher information.

Book with no author:

  • When the work does not have an author move the title of the work to the beginning of the references and follow with the date of publication. Only use “Anonymous ” if the author is the work is signed “Anonymous.” This is a new addition to APA 7.

Book with a group author:

  • Group authors can include corporations, government agencies, organizations, etc . Use the publishing organization the same way as an author's name. Put the full name of the group author in the reference list; abbreviations may be used in-text.

Merriam-Webster. (2008). Braggadocio. In Merriam-Webster’s Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary. Merriam-Webster.

Book with no author, but an editor:

Duncan, G. J., & Brooks-Gunn, J. (Eds.). (1997). Consequences of growing up poor. New York, NY: Russell Sage Foundation.

Book with an author and an editor:

Plath, S. (2000). The unabridged journals. K. V. Kukil (Ed.). New York, NY: Anchor.

Book with a translator:

Senghor, L. S. (1991). The collected poetry. (Dixon, M. Trans.) Charlottesville, VA: University Press of Virginia.

A 2nd (or more) edition:

Helfer, M. E., Kempe, R. S., & Krugman, R. D. (1997). The battered child (5th ed.). Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press.

A book with two publishing dates (include the first and most recent dates):

Trollope, F. M.  (1832/1997). Domestic manners of the Americans. New York, NY: Penguin.

One volume in a multivolume work, or the entire set:

Sturtevant, W. C. (1978). Handbook of North American Indians: Vol. 9. Washington, DC: Smithsonian Institution.

Sturtevant, W. C. (1978). Handbook of North American Indians: Vols. 1 - 15. Washington, DC: Smithsonian Institution.

Chapter or article in a book:

Follow this format: Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year of publication). Title of chapter. In A. A. Editor & B. B. Editor (Eds.), Title of book (pages of chapter). Location: Publisher.

O'Neil, J. M., & Egan, J. (1992). Men's and women's gender role journeys: A metaphor for healing, transition, and transformation. In B. R. Wainrib (Ed.), Gender issues across the life cycle (pp. 107-123). New York, NY: Springer.
