There are many online news sites to consider. Like any information you find on the internet, always take a second to evaluate a story and it's source. See the page "Is Your News Source Credible and Reliable?" for more on how to evaluate online information.

News Apps

News apps will sort and collects news stories for you. Below are a few to consider.

What About Paywalls?

When searching for articles online, you might be asked to pay for an article. This is a paywall. You should never have to pay for an article as a Butte College student. The library can get many articles for you for free through a service called Interlibrary Loan or by simply having a librarian help you with your research. However, this might take a few days, and sometimes you need something right now. So what should you do?

  1. Some paywalls are triggered by the number of views. For example, if you do not subscribe to a newspaper, you might be allowed six free articles a month. Because of this, when you find an article that you want where a paywall might be triggered by views, print it or save it as a PDF right away before the paywall is activated by further views.
  2. See if you can find the article elsewhere for free. Try copying and pasting the article title into your browser to see if the article comes up for free elsewhere.
  3. See if the library has free access to the article by conducting an eJournal search by title. Learn how to do this by watching our video tutorial on Finding a Specific Publication
  4. Still need help? Contact a librarian who is an expert at searching. You can email referenceli@butte.eduemail a subject librarian, or use the 24/7 chat service (use the chat box on this page) if you need immediate help.
