Chosing a Topic

In general, you should choose a topic based on the requirements of your assignment as well as your interest in the topic. Your assignment will require you to research one type of varying ability from the list below:

  1. Learning Disabilities
  2. Intellectual Disabilities
  3. Emotional or Behavioral Disorders
  4. Communication Disorders
  5. Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  6. Blind or Low Vision
  7. Physical or Health Disabilities
  8. Autism Spectrum Disorders
  9. Severe Disabilities

Featured Reference Databases

To become more familiar with your topic, you should become familiar with the background, jargon and discipline-specific terms of the varying ability you choose. Reference sources such as encyclopedias and Wikipedia are a good place to start when familiarizing yourself with your topic. Below is a reference source, Gale Ebooks, that the Butte College Library subscribes to. This database holds thousands of encyclopedias on a wide range of subjects and would be the best source to find definitions of your varying ability.

When you open Gale Ebooks, type your varying ability into the basic search bar as shown in the image below. It will take you to a list of encyclopedias that have your varying ability. The entries closer to the top of the list will be more relevant to your search.
