May is Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month and there are many ways to celebrate the cultures, contributions, and histories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans. The library has put together a collection of books not just for the month of May but to enjoy all year long. This collection highlights just some of the books available from the library. We have history, memoirs, YA fiction, adult fiction, poetry, and pretty much any genre you can imagine.

Our physical display for the month focuses on AAPI fiction. Come into the library to check out both classics and new releases.

National Library Week is an opportunity to appreciate the benefits of libraries, such as:Meme of Sakka from Avatar shouting "To the library!"

  • Personal help with your research
  • 24/7 chat with a librarian for that research help
  • Millions of reliable articles that aren't behind paywalls
  • Textbooks for doing homework on campus
  • All the books you can read (and more), for free!  Shared resources are better for the environment as well as for your budget.
  • Quiet study spaces
  • Free computers and printing for your academic work
  • Laptops and hotspots for checkout
  • ...and lots more!

We're marking National Library Week with a 'staff picks' table of some of our favorite books, and of course the washi tape journal workshop.  Come in and take a look!

washi tape book frontTo celebrate National Library Week the library is offering a workshop for participants to create their own washi tape journal. One of the easiest books you can create yourself, this workshop will teach you the process from start to finish including cutting, folding, and assembling the cover and pages. If you have ever wanted to sew your own bookbinding, now is your chance! All supplies are included. Though the workshop will take participants through the process with plenty of time, don’t worry if you have to leave a bit early or cannot finish. We will provide instructions for you to take with you to finish your book or make another in the future. Students, staff, and faculty are all welcome. To ensure that we have enough materials for everyone, please RSVP to the event.

When: Monday, April 24th, 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Where: Main Campus, LIB 206

You can see a few examples of the washi tape journals below. We have lots of washi tape designs to choose from.

Decolonize, once known as Diversity Days, is a week of events bringing attention to the college's efforts to promote inclusion and  "provide students with an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion as they advance in their education, careers, and as they become leaders on campus and in the community."  .  Have you ever wondered what the library does to develop these goals?  The answer is, quite a bit!  Here are just a few of the things we are doing.

Our Collection Development Policy has inclusion as a goal, and librarians make sure to purchase items from a wide variety of viewpoints and which center marginalized voices.  We also have a Library Inclusion Plan, where we assess current practices and form new goals and projects.

Our country is currently experiencing an unprecedented wave of book censorship, and this is very much an issue of inclusion.  Learn more at our Banned Books page.

For faculty and staff, we offer a page of teaching and learning resources and DEI principles.

Have you heard that it's a good idea to seek out marginalized voices in your research, but you're not sure how to do that?  We made a zine all about that!

We've got a page of resources for free images that are both diverse and accessible.

Textbooks costs are an equity issue, and ZTC and OER are the answer  Find out how to reduce the price of college!

There's plenty more, but let's keep this short and sweet.  Come into the library sometime and see what we're up to!
