September 27 - October 3 is Banned Books Week, when the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.  And it's not just about books; it's about censorship and the free exchange of ideas in all forms.

The Library has put together some materials for Banned Books Week -- click here to:

  • Read about the top ten most-challenged books of 2019, and the issue that most of them have in common.
  • Find news stories about book challenges or bans in the US, and all kinds of censorship around the world.

  • Find fun activities!
  • And, of course, read challenged or banned books -- accessible with a click of your mouse.

“Books and ideas are the most effective weapons against intolerance and ignorance.”

— Lyndon B. Johnson

We have strange times here in the North Valley; between Covid and wildfires, online classes and job worries, it's pretty stressful!  The Library wants to make your life just that little bit easier by offering all the help we can with your research needs.  Even though we can't be in the Library in real life, you can do practically everything at the Library online.*  Here are just some of the services we offer for students and faculty; check out the complete list at our Library Online Resources page that we put together especially for this lockdown.

Willy Wonka meme: You think that libraries are just books? You must be new here."

If you need to talk with a librarian to get personal research help or ask a question, use our 24/7 Chat service, which is on the Library homepage.

Access databases to search for articles, videos, reference works, and more.  It will ask you to log in with your MyBC username and password.

The Library has over 70,000 ebooks available in our databases!  Search from the Library homepage and look for books listed as "Available Online."  If you would like to request an ebook purchase, please do!

Wondering how to use the Library resources for what you need?  We've been refreshing our video tutorials and are making more all the time.  Take a look at our videos, and if you can't find out how to do the job you want to do, let us know by emailing referenceli@butte.edu and we'll put that on the list.  (We'll show you what to do, too.)

Our research guides offer more detailed help.  Check them out to find guides for using MLA and APA, writing research papers, evaluating online resources and spotting fake news, and help with research in certain subject areas.  We recently added anti-racism resources, all of which are accessible to you with just a click.

So, times are tough, but the Library is here to help -- please ask!
